These limestone slabs were reclaimed from a 1929 art deco styled section of what was Washington School, 7970 Washington Blvd in River Forest, Illinois 60305.

In 1997 Washington School was listed by the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois as one of the 10 Most Endangered Historic Places in Illinois. Click to see the document created by the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois showing the Washington School – 10 Most Endangered Historic Places 1997. Washington School was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places (Certificate date 3/14/2002, ID # 97000864) It was demolished in September of 1998 after a lengthy court process so that five new homes could be built and a public park enlarged. The 1929 portion of the school was designed by the architect firm of Perkins, Chatten & Hammond from Chicago, Illinois.

Some of these slabs were from bathroom walls and some were wainscoating in the 1929 Washington School building (as shown in a bathroom photo from another building by the same architect). In the first photo (above) for this listing you will see limestone slabs #1 — #5, in the second photo you will see slabs #6 and #7. In each of the two photos each slab is taged with its number and dimensions, This is what is written on each of the 7 tags:

#1 – 10″ wide x 43″ long, 1″ thick

#2 – 8″ wide x 43″ long, 1″ thick

#3 – 18″ wide x 34″ long, 1″ thick

#4 – 13″ wide x 35″ long, 1″ thick

#5 – 13″ wide x 35″ long, 1″ thick

#6 – 42″ wide x 43″ long, 1″ thick

#7 – 17″ wide x 43″ long, 1″ thick

This salvaged and reclaimed building material is grey-beige-tan in color with grey being the predominate color. To recycle the past I created this distinctive shelf (as shown in two photo above). The recycled building material would be ideal for counter tops, inlaid sections, back splashes, an accent area with wall tile or added to an existing environment to create a unique focal point of interest.

So if you wish to own a small part of a historic 1929 building that was registered on the the National Register of Historic Places and recycle the past get in touch with me and lets see how we can bring these reclaimed slabs back to life.
